I think you will find that it's pretty well universally accepted that Japan had already lost the war before the A bombs were dropped.
The best 'excuse' put forward for using the A bombs was to break the intransigency of the Japanese military leaders & the Emperor, while the worst explanation is that the US wanted to demonstrate the power of their new weapon (& therefore their power) to the world.
