Musser's Markets announced Wednesday it will open its third supermarket in the county at the former Columbia site of Redner's Warehouse Market, which closed last week.

Michael J. Musser, president of the company, said Musser's will sign an agreement Monday to take over the Redner's lease.

The 43,000-square-foot store, in Prospect Road Plaza, 3985 Columbia Ave., had been a Redner's since September 1995.

"Our goal to open is mid-February," Musser said.

He said Musser's had been in negotiations with Redner's for about three months before reaching an agreement for an undisclosed price Dec. 23.

The lease consists of four 5-year options and so could last for 20 years and has the blessing of the building's owner, Centro Properties Group of Conshohocken, Musser said.

Musser said he hopes to retain about 50 to 60 percent of Redner's full- and part-time staff that worked in the store.

"We offered everyone the opportunity to continue working here. All they have to do is contact us for an interview," Musser said. "We had 40 of about 60 Redner's employees contact us."

Musser's also operates a 17,000-square-foot store at the Columbia Shopping Plaza, 960 Lancaster Ave. That store is two miles from the former Redner's store.

With the opening set to take place in about five weeks, Musser said there would be only "cosmetic" changes done to the former Redner's store.
