I am disappointed by Putin. He is, as you say, intelligent and has his nation's well being at heart, not at all like the drunken bully Khrushchev.
He is sooo divisive internationally though. A little effort from him and congress and relations between the two nuclear powers could improve. Neither seem to want this though.
