Brisbane's third runway is asphalt.
Concrete has numerous problems - poor drainage because it is flat (asphalt is slightly curved), poor friction when wet (LA is very dry), problems with expansion and block joints. Demolition at the end of life (40-50 years) is a massive problem. The only real advantage is less routine maintenance.
Asphalt is trivially easy to repair and smooth - just heat and roll. On airports with a curfew any repairs can be completed overnight with zero disruptions to flights.
