Early on I made bad losses by trying to pick the next FMG in penny stocks. Lucky for me I was a uni student so in the great scheme of things I didn't lose much. Learned that you don't need to hit the jackpot in mining exploration or biotech companies to do well.
Probably more importantly though I learned not to invest in something I don't understand.
