    Hi Tim,

    Pic below is of a 5kg silver ingot I dug up after having buried it in my garden 13 years before.

    To clean it, I put a doubled layer of aluminium foil on the bottom of a glass container, added boiling water into which I'd stirred 2 heaped tablespoons of bicarb of soda and then placed the ingot onto the al foil in this water.

    It doesn't take long at all, though you might have to turn your item over from time to time.

    I've been collecting silver since the early 2000's and have used the method on several coins etc.

    Physically rubbing/scrubbing/cleaning your silver item can damage important markings eg hallmarks.
