Listing Rules for a listed company require that shareholders are informed of material news in an orderly way to avoid unfair trading.
Trading halts avoid the outcome of leaks of information from within the company or by affiliates. They also allow the company to announce news to the media, so long as shareholders are fully informed before trading restarts.
THs can be abused - last week a company which was in halt till Friday anned to the market at 9.50 on Thursday and trading started at 10.08 as usual.
Not all retail participants are able to cope with that. IMO it is one of the many things which need to be resolved by an independent overhaul.
