Actually, if you just have the stub end of a drill string
to get around and you glance the new bit off the concrete and head a couple of degrees to one side to clear the abandoned hole and drill pipe, what then? Do you jiggle back to running vertical again or does 2degs. to starboard become the new heading now. Just thinking there could still be a kilometer to go and everything has to be achieved with this kink in the hole.
Is that a problem or even a nuisance? On Hab.2 things didn't seem to go well once the first sidetrack had to be established. This was before they had the big rig and were working in just a 6 inch hole, 'I theenk'.
Even down hole drilling motors were breaking in half.
In fairness, I think tests showed there was faulty sub-standard steel in the drill pipes that had been supplied and strict QC protocols were established then. Even the down hole drill heads had some weakness that contributed to failure. Going on memory now which is pretty silly for me I'll grant.
