AZ needs to stop the trial, determine which group the subject who suffered the serious adverse event is from. This is called "unblinding" which neither the patient nor the person giving the vaccine knows. It is coded and there are procedures to "unblind" the subject.
The comparison is not an antiviral but a meningococcal vaccine which is very similar in colour/volume etc to the new Covid vaccine being tested. This minimises the chances of the patient/doctor being able to identify which group the subject is in and introduce bias into the study.
