First of all, that article is written by the guy that owns the reneweconomy.com a 100% renewable energy biased website.
Secondly, even the government's own report says the gap will be 850mega watts when Liddel closes, we are just saying 1000 mega watts for rounding up sake (and maybe future proofing).
Thirdly, there is no "massive back flip" like that greens article you posted claims. In the interview he repeats, that a gas plant will be built whether the private sector does it or not. "“So when the Liddel power station closes in 2023 or before, does it have to be gas that replaces it?” David Speers, ABC host of Insiders 20/09/2020.
“Well gas has chosen itself, because there is nothing that has been presented which meets the goals that we have which is reliability, and the firming capability for renewables to meet the gap that will be created. Of the thousand mega watts that are needed to replace Liddel there will be a mixture, there will be gas, there will also be some form of traditional coal fire which will make up part of that, but there will also be battery as well, that’s all part of the 1000 mega watts. There is about 250mega watts, that are going to be necessary to fill that plan out." Scott Morrison, Prime Minister of Australia. 20/09/2020.
You are welcome to watch the interview yourself here, at no point does the Prime Minister say that the gas plant is no longer being built. And to the informed audience, we already know it was never 1000mega watts in the first place, because the gap was only 850mega watts according to the governments own reports. I can't believe the greens turn good news into bad news, its a joke, they have nothing better to do.
I encourage you all to watch the segment yourself here:https://www.abc.net.au/insiders/sunday-20-september-full-program/12682752
Also in other news from that Insiders segment: Joel Fitzgibbon, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Resources said “what he is announcing is our plan”, even Labor supports this move on gas. Therefore, even Labor supports the gas recovery. That is a massive development.
