I find myself wondering if it is more to do with preparing for larger scale production. With some propensity for minor variations between pixels and indeed between chips, is it possible that a final production step would involve a tuning process to homogenise the output by ensuring the ASIC (FPGA?) allowed for the idiosyncrasies of each MEMS? @BobF - What do you think?

Indeed I also confess to very limited knowledge in this field.
