A conspiracy theorist has been ordered to pay more than $800,000 for a series of “deranged” online rants in which she claimed a federal MP ran an underground paedophile cabal.
Dr Anne Webster, from Mildura in country Victoria, her husband and her charity successfully sued Karen Brewer for defamation in the Federal Court over seven Facebook posts made in late April and early May.
Justice Jacqueline Gleeson described Ms Brewer’s series of posts and videos as “lacking in credibility”, with the court previously hearing that she claimed that the first-term Nationals MP was a member of a “secretive paedophile network”.
During the attack, Ms Brewer, whose Facebook page has several thousand followers, said Ms Webster’s charity Zoe Support Australia, set up to support vulnerable young mothers, was a money-laundering operation.
Among other claims that were previously aired in court, Ms Brewer said the member for Mallee was “parachuted into parliament to protect a generation of paedophiles” and her charity was involved in sex trafficking.
On Tuesday, Ms Webster was awarded $350,000, her husband Dr Philip Webster $225,000 and Zoe Support $300,000.
Ms Brewer, who did not appear at the legal proceedings at any stage and is believed to now live in New Zealand, was also ordered to pay costs.
She has also been permanently restrained by the court from making further similar posts about the Websters.
“Their long lives of decency and good deeds, coupled with the incoherence of much of Ms Brewer’s messages, make it reasonably unlikely that any but the most suggestible individuals would think less of them as a result of Ms Brewer’s publications,” Justice Gleeson said.
“However, social media has provided Ms Brewer with a platform by which she is able to reach suggestible individuals who may believe her claims.”
A long line of Mildura community leaders provided glowing character references for Ms Webster, who was in 2019 awarded the Mildura Rural City Council Citizen of the Year, and Mr Webster, who has practised medicine in Mildura for 40 years.
Ms Webster was said to be “shocked, traumatised and extremely distressed” and was worried the rumours could end her political career.
“While I consider that rational people would regard Ms Brewer’s publications as delusional, I accept that some people may find them persuasive,” Justice Gleeson said.
The most popular of Ms Brewer’s posts received 315 comments, was viewed 2400 times and shared 204 times.
Justice Gleeson said the posts, which were taken down by Facebook for violating their terms of service, “will probably have been believed by a small but not insignificant segment of the Mildura community, thereby harming the good reputations of the Websters”.
She also said “reasonable people” would dismiss them “as deranged”.
She found that while the Websters’ reputations had been damaged, the most serious hurt was that caused to Ms Webster’s charity that she established in 2011 to help destitute and vulnerable pregnant women and young mothers..............................."
