To the first part of your post, here are the percentages for battleground states in 2016, as you can see these are very close margins. Maybe you think there's nothing to be concerned about but I think Democrat strategists would be thinking differently.

If there has been a change in strategy by the Democrats, and you have not shown that that is the case, it is most likely to counter Trump. He has repeatedly stated that he will not accept a result determined by postal votes. This is against all principles of democracy.
