What has this book got to do with wide open agriculture? This book was quite trendy some years ago. If woa wants to keep on it to Growth trajectory, I don't believe it can adhere to the principles outlined in the book. They will not get enough produce to sell as there is not enough producers strictly farming in those ways.
I think you will find that woa does not strictly adhere to what is in the book of Massey!
However, things like stating that modern agriculture is poisoning consumers or poisoning the land is generally a lot of rubbish. My observation over four decades or so of farming is that farmers who use lots of artificial fertilizers and chemicals tend to keep on growing better crops. Yes it is good to use manure where you can, but they are not as necessary as the other really. The quality and nutritional values of the food produced today is probably unsurpassed in human history. Yes there may well have been some sacrifices to taste and traded it off with shelf life in some fruits for example , but that is not what that quote of Massey is referring to.
Of course there have been limits placed on the amount of fertilizers one can use in areas where the Soil types mean it can leach into the underground water , and also where there are very high rates used.
