That may or may not be so (I don't know anything about mineral sands mining) but it's pales in comparison with open pit gold mining:

For every 100 tonnes PROCESSED you only get 200 or 300 GRAMS of gold. If you include the mining of waste to extract the ore body and assume a strip ratio of 10, that means for every 100 tonnes DUG / MINED, you only get 20 or 30 grams of gold. So if your friend is correct, you collect 100,000 times more heavy minerals than you do gold for each tonne mined.

They don't call gold a precious metal for nothin!
