When I said there is quite a bit of conflicting research, what I should have said - meant to say is there is not a lot of published scientific research on the impact or otherwise of controlled burning.
There are a lot of vocal opinions, unsupported by research, on both sides of the argument. The squeaky wheel gets attention - and empty vessels make the most noise - take your pick!
