Roughly the US can think about 2017 as a bear market completion.
Our history is that we do better and July 2013 is my view locally, though I don't mandate that that will be a lower low than this year.

Can be translated as "hardship, adversity etc.".
So a simple translation would be perhaps "character developed by handling the vagaries of adversity".
