Reading that article, the longhaulers' immune systems are still completely out of whack and over-exercising, which is leading to more inflammation and ongoing damage--so there could be something to modulate, halt, and assist in healing.
As well, lungs and heart were clear leaders of negative impact--which is where, again, the MSCs shine.
It may be, however, that the level of immune system overactivity in longhaulers, while sufficient to negatively impact quality of life, is NOT sufficiently high make MSCs effective. Similar to our cells working in the WORST cases (in AGVHD, ARDS, CHF, etc.).
That prompted me to do some very quick research to see whether MSCs were being looked at in chronic quality-of-life impacting diseases like Lyme disease...and sure enough, there are MSC trials involving Lyme disease patients:
