We produce many of the same products as the US. And we compete in the same market - ie. China.

Prior to this New Trade Deal between the US and China, we were the preferred supplier, over the US goods.

Trump demanded China import more US Agricultural goods under the New Trade Deal.

In the short term, there are the ONLY a limited number of stomachs (Chinese people) consuming a given number of tonnes of agricultural goods - ie. the market in China was already supplied.

That meant the Chinese was forced to "Switch" purchasing from Australia to the US, in order to meet the demands of the New Trade Deal between the US and China.

Bottom line: In the short term, you can't eat much more than what you have been consuming. In the long term, yes - that is possible as the population increases.

But Trump's deal wanted results NOW, so he could go to US farmers and tell them he was winning for them.
