We get a mention in the Australian financial review:Biden presidency to accelerate electric vehicle uptake: Syrah
Peter Ker
President-elect Joe Biden's US election victory will have implications for Australian miners producing materials for use in the electric vehicle space, according to our resources reporter Peter Ker.
The US has sought to secure supply chains for several "critical minerals" over the past two years amid concerns that China dominates the global production of commodities like graphite, rare earths and other minerals.
That has seen numerous Australian mining companies establish closer ties with the US, including rare earths producer Lynas Corporation, which secured a funding grant from the US military, and Jervois Mining, which is developing a cobalt project in Idaho.
Syrah Resources has built a graphite beneficiation plant in the US state of Louisiana under a strategy to be close to big auto manufacturers in the US and to position itself to benefit from the US government's increasing focus on critical minerals supply chains.
Syrah chief executive Shaun Verner said the US government would continue to focus on critical minerals and he expected a Joe Biden presidency to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.
''Over the past 12 months both parties have acknowledged the strategic importance of battery raw materials to transportation sector energy transition,'' he said.
"Even if modified, Biden's clean energy plan will likely accelerate the decarbonisation of the transport sector and promote supply chain localisation in the US, both [of which will be] positive for Syrah."
Graphite is an ingredient in the anode of the lithium-ion batteries which power many modern consumer products, including electric vehicles.
Cobalt, lithium, nickel and copper are also expected to enjoy strong demand if the world adopts electric vehicles.
