Dr Alisa Savetamal, Medical Director at the Connecticut Burn Center recently conducted a webinar on the health economics of allograft vs BTM in two patients with major burns. https://www.woundsresearch.com/video/dr-alisa-savetamal-presents-health-economics-allograft-vs

She concluded that there is a strong argument to be made for the potential cost savings for the care of these major burns.
- The patient benefits by not having to return to the OR for frequent allograft exchanges (OR ~$125/min). Patient 1 saved 40 pieces of allograft being used by being treated with BTM, while Patient 2 saved 100 pieces of allograft.
- The burn team benefits from being able to concentrate on other endeavours for the patient such as allografting or autografting of other injury sites which improves patient care.
- The institution benefits from the significant cost savings of not having to reapply multiple pieces of allograft to the burn site and return to the OR.

When asked if she had discussed her findings with the hospital CFO she mentioned it had not come to mind. Eventually these conversations are going to have to be made and I am certainly eager to see the numbers begin to stack up overwhelmingly in our favour. To my knowledge there have been few cases investigating the health economics of BTM vs standard of care so far but this is certainly a topic we need to give more interest towards.
