The miners are being laid off all across Australia. Nothing to do with Workchoices, but all to do with the "world economic cyclone" as described by Mr Rudd.
My recollection of events was that when all of the Unions across oz were carrying on about Workchoices, the W.A. miners were not. I ask you and others....why??
People have got a bit carried away about bagging workchoices. It was not perfect, but what Industrial relations system is? I believe that there were just as many people who would have been better off under Workchoices as there were those who were not. We will never know now.
One thing is for sure though. More people would have been kept in employment in times like these because of the flexibility in the system under Workchoices and the subsequent reductions in employment costs.
