$5.5 billion buyback? The notice on 11/10/2019 said it was a $500 million 12 month buy-back facility for Capital Management purposes. The updated notice on 10/10/20 said the buy-back facility was being renewed for an "unlimited duration" but did not say the total amount of $ placed into the buy-back facility other than saying the maximum amount would continually be reviewed under the 10/12 rule.
The bottom line though is that they haven't bought any shares back for a very long time and I think they have no intention of buying shares back on market, I think it's just an accounting method to keep $500 million stashed away in a facility for a while; for what purpose I don't know. Maybe to dish out as a Special and extra dividend - now that would be nice
