Not an expert, but your theory that JPM buy to lend sounds suss to me. Like all large IB's JPM has a large managed fund business. I understood those funds lend shares to hedge funds. Obviously, lending fees go the managed fund investors, not JPM. JPM would be taking price risk if it simply bought and lent.
