Well if they revalue assets to the price they bought them then no one has learned anything and we will only ensure that there will be an even bigger decline or crash in the future.
Mark to market is a sound principle. If you bought something at say 200k and now you can only sell it for 100k then shouldn't you value it at 100k? What if the market doesn't change for say 10years??? What if even after 10years you could only sell it for 100k??
But the company will right in its balance sheets that its worth 200k because that is what they bought it for.
If they get rid of mark to market then I am afraid that things will be much worse next time there is a decline.
Keep mark to market. An asset is only worth what someone is willing to pay. If you overpaid then bad luck you should do your due diligence first.
If there is no market for a particular asset then it is worthless!!! Simple. You made a bad investment.
