I'm not saying you're stupid and to become like one of these children has nothing to do with becoming gullible. Children in their innocence are often brutally honest. They are pure, they are innocent and free of hypocrisy, they live with a sense of happiness and wonder and if they have not suffered some brutality in life for the most part children have radiant hearts.
It has nothing to do with being simple, gullible, or accepting blindly, in fact it is just the opposite. Adults tend to be rusted to beliefs, children will explore them with fresh eyes and find their own truths.
The complexity of religion comes mostly from humans rewriting the narrative to fit their own beliefs and perspectives. A classic example is that every earth science tells us that the Flood of Noah did not happen and could not happen. We have all this wonderful science from G.d to keep it simple and then look what the religious have done to Noah's story. Now it's about literally building a great boat, collecting a pair of animals from all over the planet, 7 related people breeding a new humanity. Talk about utterly ridiculous and complex.
Simple is Noah offered a teaching from G.d that was like a great ark, it was a covenant with G.d and if you followed it it could protect you from self and passion which was symbolically shown as a flood. Even Jesus commented, that His lot was the same as Noahs. I didn't see anybody is Jesus time get washed away.
As for the Bible being a spiritual or literal work, it's both, but the strongest points are all spiritual. It you read the Bible as literal only then it is a story. If you unlock the spiritual teachings then it is a life guide.
