Strictly speaking, you should be looking at which is the better investment - regardless of whether or not a current holding would have to be sold at a loss. If you believe that 'loss' position is an aberation then it may still be a better investment - but future expectations are the important bit. Besides, there can be certain advantages down the track in offsetting accumulated losses against gains.
