Terra Preta was the method the Indians used to enrich the poor Amazon soils. It's been tested and proven to have quite amazing results, even growing in volume as it pulls nutrients from the air and becomes alive again. The soils they produced were largely abandoned hundreds of years ago as the Spanish diseases wiped the people out but are still fertile and growing in volume.
Another method mentioned on Land Line recently with farmers showing very fast results by maintaining ground cover to increase soil carbon content.
High soil carbon content is the key.
