Was van Gogh deemed to be bipolar? I had a read a book many moons ago that had another diagnosis. I can't remember now because it was a lesser known illness but included gastric issues as well as mental disturbance and would have been inflamed by the consumption of absinthe. Not the modern inert absinthe but back then it contained wormwood, a mildly hallucinatory turpene.
