lay out a 6x6 grid of rope in my back yard with pieces of paper with codes of 36 random companies from ASX and let a baby duckling wander over the grid. Those that the duckling craps on I choose, which when you think of it is counter intuitive - you would think that if it craps on it the duck thinks the stock must be crap but I take it that is ducks way of telling me. If duck quacks at same time I put more money into that stock.

Seriously, I research the company, look back through announcements and prior SP history - question anything out of the ordinary. Do a SWOT analysis. Look at the board and do some research - looking to see if any shady past there. Then I research the industry - SWOT analysis. If industry or company is depressed - why? Is it cyclical? When is the next expected upturn. What markets are they exposed to ? I try to avoid some stocks that have over exposure to single market - eg look at TWE SP recently with the China issues. Is it something that is a fundamental game changer like BRN is and I think worth the punt then will buy.

Just my opinion and does not always turn out the best- sometimes things come out of left field.
