Thanks - I appreciate your efforts - ROC stands for Rate of Change and everything else you say seems pretty right. Metastock has its own programming language - learning it is on my todo list - I did a bit of programming at uni- not much and back in the days when we were still punching holes in stacks of cards and feeding them into a mainframe.

I have been mucking around with this all morning - I've found that Guppy's other formulas usually work without too much hassle - I think I'll just send an e-mail to metastock support - something I should have done in the first place.

if anyone out there wants a formulae to search for candlestick patterns in metastock I wrote one which has been working well.
