GREENPOWER Energy says a study over the Walyering trend in its EP 447 permit in the North Perth Basin has identified a coal seam gas prospect as well as a conventional oil and gas prospect.

The company said the study – carried out to identify areas of enhanced permeability – has highlighted the Charbon area in the northern portion of permit.

Charbon is estimated to cover 50 square kilometres and is 800-2000m deep. The structure is also close to the Dandaragan Trough which has deep coals that could supply a further hydrocarbon charge into the coals and sandstones.

According to Greenpower, Charbon was previously identified by Kjirt Exploration Services as having a contingent CSG resource of 540 billion cubic feet of methane.

“The results of this study have provided us with information that suggests high potential for the northern part of the Walyering tenement and, in fact, the whole of the Coomallo-Walyering fault trend,” chairman Alan Flavelle said.

“We think that this part of the basin holds substantial resources for CSM [coal seam methane], tight gas extraction and conventional hydrocarbons.”

The company said it planned to continue to analyse the dataset of the Charbon structure for the best way of unlocking its potential, and will carry out seismic to determine the best location for a test of the conventional hydrocarbon potential.

It also plans to drill an initial CSG well later in the year and a conventional test well in mid-2010.

Last year, Greenpower identified contingent CSG resources of about 1.63 trillion cubic feet of gas hosted in EP 447.

In 2001, the drilling of Walyering-4 confirmed the complexity of the field, and a review of previous drilling and seismic in the Walyering field identified 200Bcf of recoverable gas plus associated condensate.

The study was carried out by Prodemas International
