"It is being said that the distance between Prominent Hill gold and copper mine and the “sensitive” weapons testing range was at least 150 km."
It's intersting that this distance of 150-160km keeps cropping up. That is journalistic crap.
In fact this is the distance from the township of Woomera to the PH mine.
The actual Woomera Prohibited Area is a little bit bigger than that......around about the size of the United Kingdom in the north of South Australia.
Originally the range, which was surveyed by Len Beadel (known as the Gun Barrel Highway) tracked rockets out to the Indian Ocean vis a tracking station at Mirikata (just south of Coober Pedy) then over Exmouth on the Western Australian coast.
That sort of rocketry is not needed anymore.....hence the closure of Exmouth in the mid 90s.
What goes on out there now may (or may not be) very close to the weaponry that you may see on the nightly news.
IMO good decision by Swan. However he may now be committed to providing a lifeline to OZ. Which is fine.
Anyone heard from Makemepoor??
