Iron ore is at record prices propped up by Chinese demand. When you use iron ore you use metallurgical coal which is what they get from the Bowen basin. As COVID has made things hard for Vale who's iron ore shipments have dropped I imagine it would be hard to replace our coal. If it is thermal coal they are restricting they can replace it with local, low grade coal but their cost will be increasing pollution.
But that may be more necessity than choice, they are short of money. Chinese rice importers have welched on $2 mill from Burma. The tariffs on our barley, used for better quality beer, should be looked at in this light. Trump has made life difficult for China. China is making life difficult for us.
