There's no question the Fed has a program of leasing gold it keeps on behalf of the USA. Allen Greenspan testified in 1999 before congress that the Fed, and other central banks routinely lease gold to commercial banks & broker/dealers in order to "restrain" the price and "defend" the dollar.

What difference does it make to have gold reserves if the Fed's debt (Federal reserve notes) can't be cleared with gold. It's the same as a non-recourse loan.

I would be suprised if there would be any gold left in Fort Knox, and if there were it would definitely not be owned by the USA. Comparison of this legitimate question to a belief in space aliens is nonsensical.

I think RP and the co-sponsors have a very strong argument. Perhaps the inability of government to give a straight answer, is sufficient answer in itself. Previous attempts by Paul and others over the years have always met with government obstruction. The tinfoil references are disappointing.

Why was it necessary to end this article with conspiracy theories from the nutjob fringe? Government gold price manipulation is no more crazy than their meddling in Gilts, Forex, CDS or QE. Why, even with the system collapsing, do you support it with logical fallacies?

Why would anyone not approve of an audit? What is there to hide? That they don't want an audit is a form of lying.
Ron Paul is doing his best to expose the criminals in this country.

I find it less than subtle that juxtaposed to a rather serious bill to determine if our country's gold has been lent to third parties and then sold by that third party are "conspiracy theories" about aliens, armageddon and FEMA. Why not just come out and say we think that Ron Paul is silly??

Strange that proven facts such as the georgia guidstones are mixed with theories on u.f.o's and aliens.......

Great Article! It covers the salient topics with no fluff. It's unfortunate that the Times chose to juxtapose this piece with a group of random conspiracy blurbs.
An independent audit is long, LONG overdue. Our (U.S.) government deserves absolutely no consideration based on "Trust."

How are the Georgia guidestones a "theory"?
P Mason, stoneville,
The section entitled "Conspiracy theories" has nothing to do with this story -- unless the intention is to smear anybody asking uncomfortable questions. Surely the independent auditors will recognize that a piece of paper promising to return the physical gold is worth far less than the gold itself.

All we need is a Glooper (for you Pratchett fans).

"Is there any gold inside Fort Knox?" We have had the Nuclear Age, The Space Age, The Computer Age, etc. We are now living in The Corruption Age, when BILLIONS disappear, as if by magic, and no one goes to jail. So, back to your question....!
