Minas Gerais Public Ministry (MPMG) will open an investigation to investigate Vale's activities in an area close to the Córrego do Feijão Dam, in Brumadinho, in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, a structure that broke down in 2019, killing 270 people.

The measure was taken after the death of a mining worker who worked there. The accident happened this Friday (18). The slope of the pit where the dam is detached, burying Júlio César de Oliveira Cordeiro, 34, who was working on a backhoe.

The Public Ministry also informed that "it has been following the police investigations conducted by the Civil Police about possible criminal responsibility".

This Saturday (19), the city of Brumadinho suspended, by means of a decree, the operating license and location of mining company Vale and its subcontractors in the municipality.

The measure, published in an extra edition of the city's Official Gazette on Friday (18), was taken after the worker died in a burial at the Córrego do Feijão mine. According to the Fire Department, a embankment collapsed near the B1 dam rupture site, which left 270 victims last year, among those killed and missing.


According to the city, the suspension is valid for seven days or until facts are clarified and the safety of workers is guaranteed. According to the Executive, the decree does not affect the works of the pipeline on the Paraopeba River or the search operations of the Fire Department for the 11 missing victims of the dam burst.


Through a note, the mining company said that "immediately after the accident, Vale paralyzed its activities in Córrego do Feijão. The company continues to support the authorities in investigating the causes and will continue to maintain a permanent dialogue with the competent public bodies."
