If you look over the past 3 years you will see that sanofi has only been buying 'drug' developers. They have divested themselves of non core ie - 'on drug' businesses. I think this may explain why they have gone for the funding rather than takeover route
sorry to burst the SA takeover bubble as I know many of you don't like it when the facts get in the way of a good mutual backslap
