WOW has just issued a recall for a competitor's prawns that come from Thailand.

No such problems with TGR's (Tassal's) Tropic Co brand with its two kilogram boxes of Australian raw prawns for $45, still on special. If you can't find the Tropic Co boxes in the freezers, ask the service deli staff.

That's why I buy this new Tropic Co product and not imported prawns.

Apparently WOW is using the Tropic Co prawns (from Queensland - two farms - and Yamba NSW) as some of the prawns sold from its service deli as well, but I prefer to bring a box home so we cook them ourselves as we like and importantly when we like.

Remember almost all prawns - farmed as in TGR's case or wild caught (the latter sometimes overseas and unustainably) are frozen soon after being caught , so 'fresh prawns' is a misnomer.

Having now had the Tropic Co prawns twice, they're pleasant.

Just days before Christmas, Woolworths has issued an urgent recall on one of its popular frozen seafood lines.

The prawns originate from Thailand and the recall, from Food Standards Australia was due to “potential microbial contamination”, which “may cause illness if consumed”.

A spokesman for Woolworths said its fresh seafood and other frozen seafood products remained safe.

“Our range of fresh prawns are unaffected by the recall and perfectly safe for our customers to enjoy this Christmas.”

The Woolworths-branded prawns were purchased at stores in Victoria, South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia, and at Woolworths Metro stores in Victoria.

“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice and should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the Food Standards website recommended.
