We used to have wood burning trucks during and after WW2. The Units were called "Imbert Gas Generation Units" and it worked for about 2 hours and then you had to clean out the flamed out unit. Mostly at a bottom of a hill. They stank like the pest. Stoke up the top unit with wood, and the the bottom unit, light up the bottom unit and wait till te timber in the top unit generated enough gas to drive away. Were about the size of a large electric water heater for trucks, and smaller for sedans.
