The idea of value/wealth/money changes when you have more of it. My partner was obsessed with Kylie Jenner (you know the one that makes all the money selling cosmetics?). Anyway, the pandemic came in to full swing and friends and family lost jobs or income but the whole Kardashian/Jenner clan keep posting about their lavish lifestyle on social media. My partner now thinks a bit differently about that family because she has been around people that don't have much at all. The more disconnected you are from something the less it means to you. So in your example of a "full years wage", to people that have ample money are disconnected from that view and just see it as spare change or a small amount of money.
