It goes a little deeper than this. There are serious issues with latency (lag) on wireless connections, they're no good for low latency applications. Maybe future technology could address this, but it would seem we don't have the know-how at present, so must go with wired. We're already well behind other countries, I don't think waiting is an option.

Brand new housing estates in suburbia cannot even get reliable high speed broadband, let alone rural areas - because Telstra has continued using RIM/pair gain technology to keep costs down. It's entirely unacceptable for a brand new house in a densely populated area to only have dialup or flaky wireless available. It's bad enough that I'm 8km from the city and can only get wireless (and good luck during peak periods).

It's a shame to see the investors may get screwed over, but I will be extremely pleased to see the end of Telstra's reign.
