Speaking of tin, I did some sums and believe it could be an attractive proposition to build a small tin smelter near Renison. There are two ways of processing, in a small refractory furnace powered by black coal, or electric arc. The latter could be worth a special look because of the good supply of hydro power in Tasmania. The electric process produces 99.9% pure tin for premium uses. (Electronics?)
Removing reliance on China for processing given their recent behaviour would be a positive. It would not have to be a large plant but would be a significant value adder and would of course boost employment in the area. Given that there is a small port near by it might be possible to do some recycling too, with imported scrap.
Mount Lyell was a pretty bad polluter, but this would have few problems. Tin is a low bulk high value metal. Australia has of course plenty of suitable coal not too far away, such as the Hunter Valley or Port Kembla.
