4DS did the R&D and has the tech. WD would be licensing the technology to launch their own SCM products. WD does not have to carry the scientists and engineers on its balance sheet and for a small amount of money (TBH - so far they have not really put up any real money), gain access to potentially breakthrough technology. A great solution for a debt-laden company.
