Very interesting (and alarming) stuff. I've just reread all the company drilling announcements from 2003 onwards to try and understand better what is happening. Also found:

Whilst I'm starting to get a better sense of what's involved I guess it takes a lifetime to fully understand the technology of drilling. Do any of you have helpful references to online resources that explain basic drilling and well management? I'd particularly like to see some diagrams of the actual drilling and caseing process, how the pressures at differnt depths are managed, and how the BOPs are managed.

In the interim I'll keep looking around in wikipedia and see where it leads me - usually a good start.
