I am no legal expert, but to me it appears that what happened on Reddit is flagrant share price manipulation and collusion.
It's no different to what happens on HC or any other stock forum, eg. BRN. People get excited, post count grows and the sentiment spreads. Sentiment drives price much more so than fundamentals. You can't control people posting pictures of rocket ships and Lambos.
The simple fix is a law which prevents individual funds taking more than say 5% of the free float of shares as shorts. If several funds collectively short a company to the tune of 140%, then obviously there's something very wrong with the company. In such cases, individual traders should steer clear. But funds have to bear (and manage) the risk of Redditors betting against them en masse. They have the right to do that, imo.
