Professional polling is the most accurate indicator in electoral terms. It is not a test of who is right or who is wrong or who is smart etc. The fact is the government is there to serve the people in a democratic process. Everyone entitled to a vote has equal weighting since most gerrymanders were eliminated. Governments that cannot gain the support of the majority of the population get tossed out. That is how it is and how it should be IMO.
