You are not wrong with that statement - There is maybe even more truth in that that you think. EV is way more Publicly discussed, accepted and seen as (probably) THE ONLY SOLUTION in terms of managing energy storage now and in the future.

One simple but IMO great example as to how the public sees this (I can only speak for Germany but could imagine neighbouring counties are similar) is the fact that you have so called "Euro Classes for Diesel powered cars" most cities do not allow Diesel (pre DFP etc) cars into their inner city. Diesel is seen as dirty and so are petrol cars (even tho they are not as heavily regulated/banned from some inner city areas)

The second factor which should not be under estimated is the fuel price. It is much much higher than here in AU. Example from google search (might vary depending on the region and type of petrol) But say it was 143.2 cents in 2019 = 1.43 euro = 2.24 AUD ! VS ~ 1.52 AUD in NSW (Again google search)
