With progressive and permanent memory loss, we lose self identity, we lose self awareness, we no longer recognise family, friends or acquaintances, we are remnants of our former selves. What we are essentially, mentally, psychologically, is a bundle of memories operating within a functional brain, information on who we are, what we do, where we live, what we own, who our family and friends are, language, culture, likes, dislikes, hobbies, interests....and without a functional memory, all is gone, lost.
