Definitely looking forward to the financial freedom.

I have revised my plans for what to do when MYQ and NC6 come good. After I finish my PhD I'm going to go traveling:

Exit Sydney, 3 days in Tokyo, 3 days in Moscow, 3 days in Berlin, 3 days in Marsaille, and then set up a base in Aix-En-Provence for 4 months to intensively learn the language (I already speak a bit of French and will be learning for the next few years until I leave) and take weekend trips away to the local cities and towns (Montpellier, Arles, Avignon, Marsaille, Cannes, Nice, Monaco). After that I will visit Madrid, Lisbon, and Porto for a couple of weeks in total before setting up a base in Grenoble for a few months to extend my language knowledge and visit cities (Lyon, Geneva, Turin, Milan). After that there is an obligatory month in Paris before visiting Brussels, Antwerp, the Hague, and Amsterdam and thensetting up shop in another northern town (Maybe Amiens) for the remainder of the year. I will come home via New York, Montreal, Toronto, Dallas, Hawaii. Somehow have to think about some time near Bordeaux, so my itinerary isn't set yet LOL

It's apparently pretty straight-forward to get a 12 month Visa for France. If I decide I want to stay longer, I can get a four year visa if I invest 300k euros into French stocks. If I were to stay longer I would try to find a French wife and eventually get citizenship and then spend the rest of my 40s, 50, and 60s living between somewhere in France (in their summer) and Launceston (in their summer), unless I have kids (which really would be a spanner in the works).
