The mechanism of this compound towards SARS CoV 2 is basically to "repel boarders". The virus is blocked and cannot merge its membrane with the host cell, so the cell does not get hijacked and cannot be used to make more copies of the virus. The virus is effectively neutralised and presumably gets cleaned up by the body's own mechanisms.
But this is not a long term preventative against COVID, like a vaccination is, and it gets washed out of the system over time with a half life measured in days. The regimen is to have a spray of it up your nose daily. This gives ongoing protection against incoming virus particles entering via the mouth/nose/lungs. There is good reason to believe this effectiveness shown in ferrets will also apply to humans.
If the IV version has similar properties it will presumably extend protection to the whole body, and thus presumably can be used to treat individuals infected with the virus, effectively preventing any ongoing replication of the virus in that individual. The viral load in the person will rapidly fall and the individual will recover rapidly. This is like giving someone with sepsis an antibiotic. They rapidly get better as the infective agent is killed.
The good thing about it is that appears to be cheap to make in bulk, is non-toxic, stable, needs no refrigeration, and can be dosed as easily as a nasal spray. Whats not to like? I want some!
